Google Business Profile verification video checklist for a Christmas light installer

Google Business Profile Verification for Installers

Invalid Date

A phone that never rings in October usually has one cause. Your Google Business Profile is not verified, or it is not verified right. Google Business Profile verification is the step that puts your Christmas light company on the map when a homeowner searches "Christmas light installation near me."

I am a retired firefighter. I built an install company to over $1 million a year with four crews, sold it in 2018, and now coach more than 43,000 contractors through ChristmasLights.io. When a member tells me the leads are slow, I check the profile before I check anything else.

Watch the video above and I will walk you through the video verification screens step by step. Then come back here for the checklist.

Why does Google Business Profile verification matter for installers?

Until you verify, your listing is a draft. Google will not show it to the public the way it shows a verified one. You cannot answer reviews. You cannot post photos of finished jobs. You cannot show up in the map pack, which is the three listings above the regular search results.

Most homeowners never scroll past those three. If you are not in them, you do not exist to that customer.

Verification also proves one more thing. It tells Google you are a real business in a real place. That trust is the base for everything else you do to rank.

What are the ways to verify?

Google picks the methods it offers you. You do not get to choose. New service businesses see video verification more and more.

MethodHow it worksWatch out for
PostcardGoogle mails a code to your address. You type it in.Slow. It fails if the address is wrong or the mail never shows up.
Phone or textGoogle sends a code to your business number.Only offered to some profiles.
EmailGoogle sends a code to an email on your domain.Only offered to some profiles.
VideoYou record a short, continuous video that proves the business is real. One rough take can get you rejected. Plan it first.

How do you get ready for video verification?

Treat it like a job walkthrough. You are proving you run a real company from a real place. Do the prep the day before.

  1. Match your name everywhere. Use the same business name on the profile, your website, your Facebook page, and your YouTube channel. Matching names raise your odds of getting verified.
  2. Get your signage ready. Have your business name visible on a sign, a door, or a wrapped truck or trailer.
  3. Stage your gear. Ladders, spools of light, clips, totes, and your storage rack tell Google what you do.
  4. Charge your phone and clear space. You need the Google Maps app and a steady signal.
  5. Have your business documents close. A license or insurance paper helps if Google asks for proof.

A branded truck and a real shop or storage building do more than any words you write. They prove the location is real. If you own a building for your lights, use it.

What do you show in the verification video?

Record in one take. Do not cut, edit, or pause. Follow the prompts Google shows on your screen, because the exact list changes. Here is the order that works for an install company.

  1. Start on the street. Show the road, your building or the area around it, and any street sign.
  2. Show your business name on the sign, door, or vehicle.
  3. Walk in. Show the space where you work and store your lights.
  4. Show your gear. Pan across the ladders, the spools, and the pre-built strings.
  5. Show your truck and trailer with your name on it.
  6. Show proof you manage the business when Google asks for it.

Move slowly. Keep the phone steady. Let the camera stay on each item for a second or two.

What gets a profile rejected or suspended?

I have watched good contractors lose a season to a rejected profile. These are the causes I see most.

  • Fake or borrowed addresses. A mailbox or a UPS box is not a real office. Do not use one.
  • Keywords in the name. Your profile name must match your real-world name on your sign and truck. Do not stuff extra words in to game the map.
  • Changing details after launch. Do not keep editing your name, phone number, or address on a new profile. Build it slowly.
  • A messy video. Cuts, a hidden sign, or no view of the location can all end in a rejection.

If you work from home and do not want the public to see your address, you can hide it and list a service area instead. Keep the address on file accurate.

How does your profile work with yard signs?

They feed each other. A homeowner sees your yard sign on a Tuesday. That night they search your company name. If your profile is verified, they see your photos, your reviews, and a button to call. If it is not, they see nothing and call the next guy.

Plan for about 1,000 signs for a $100,000 first year, which costs roughly $3,000. Put "Christmas Light Installation" and a big phone number on the sign and nothing else. Then make sure the same phone number is on your profile. You can order signs through ChristmasLights.io/signs.

What do you do right after you get verified?

Verification opens the door. Now you fill the room.

  • Fill out the full business description. Use the words customers search, like "Christmas lights."
  • Add photos of finished jobs at dusk with every light on.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review, in person, the day you finish.
  • Post a photo every week.

Your profile also needs a phone number that gets answered and a way to quote fast. If you still need lights and gear for the season, start with the pro light kits at Christmas Lights HQ. I built that store for contractors. You can also read the start your Christmas business guide for the full setup list.

If you want me to walk through the whole lead system with you, the online training covers profile, signs, ads, and quoting in order.

Google Business Profile Verification FAQ

Can I verify a profile for a business I run from home?

Yes. Verify it as a service-area business. You can hide your home address from the public, but Google still needs to confirm you are real.

Why did Google reject my verification video?

The most common reasons are a video with cuts, no visible business name, or no view of the location. Record again in one take and show the sign, the space, and your gear.

Should I put "Christmas lights" in my business name?

Only if it is part of your real business name. Google wants the profile name to match your sign and your truck. Put the keywords in your description, services, and posts instead.

Do I need a storefront?

No. You do need to prove a real business exists. A branded truck, a storage building, and a clear service area do that for most install companies.

Can I change my profile after verification?

You can, but do it with care. Big changes to the name or address on a new profile can trigger a review and a suspension.

Is your profile verified today, or is it still sitting in draft while your competitors take the calls?
